America’s favorite truck brand is changing the game with the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. This all-electric full-size truck can tow substantial loads, travel hundreds of miles, and even power your home in a blackout without using a drop of gas.
Power, Performance, and Battery Range
Under the F-150 Lightning, two motors send power to all four wheels for standard four-wheel-drive performance. The truck’s lithium-ion battery pack has an innovative exostructure to shield the pack during off-road rides. The battery is also conveniently mounted between the frame and rails so that it doesn’t interfere with cabin or bed space.
The F-150 Lighting lives up to its name with instant torque to create an exceptionally quick performance. With the extended battery pack, Ford estimates that this all-electric truck will go from zero to 60 mph in the mid 4-second range.
In addition to its quick, strong battery performance, the F-150 Lightning features an independent rear suspension that minimizes body roll and smooths over any imperfections in the pavement. Ford also assures us that the drivetrain has been torture-tested to ensure that it lives up to the automaker’s reputation for toughness.
Ford’s Power My Trip technology considers your current battery level and integrates charging stations into your trip. It can even take towing and payload status into consideration. This system will map your favorite routes, help you locate nearby charging stations, and more.
As you drive, the Intelligent Range technology learns how much battery power you use in certain conditions. It takes a wide range of conditions into account— including weather, traffic, trailer weight, and payload — to estimate how far the remaining battery power will take you. The system can even consider future conditions, like a mountain range on the horizon.
Finally, there’s the Ford Intelligent Backup Power system. Combined with the available 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro, you can use the system to power your entire house for about three days using the F-150’s battery power alone. Or, ration the battery, and you can power your home for up to 10 days! The system can be triggered automatically or manually, ensuring that you can keep the lights on after a severe weather event or similar catastrophe.
Expert Reviews
After reviewing other journalists' research on the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, it's clear that this all-electric truck has both benefits and drawbacks. One of the major benefits is the F-150 Lightning's impressive towing and hauling capabilities. According to Car and Driver, the truck is expected to tow up to 10,000 pounds and carry a maximum payload of 2,000 pounds. This is comparable to some of the best gas-powered trucks on the market, making the F-150 Lightning a viable option for drivers who need a truck for heavy-duty work.
Another benefit of the F-150 Lightning is its innovative technology features. The Enhanced Pro Power Onboard system, for example, allows drivers to power their homes during a blackout using the truck's battery. The truck's Intelligent Range technology also helps drivers plan their trips by estimating how far the remaining battery power will take them based on a wide range of conditions. According to Motor Trend, this technology can even take into account future conditions like a mountain range on the horizon.
However, there are also some potential drawbacks to the F-150 Lightning. One of the main concerns is the availability and accessibility of charging stations for electric vehicles. There are currently fewer charging stations than gas stations in the United States, and it can be difficult to find a charging station in some areas. Additionally, the F-150 Lightning's all-electric powertrain may limit its range, which could be a concern for drivers who frequently travel long distances.
Overall, while the F-150 Lightning has some impressive benefits, there are also potential drawbacks that should be considered before making a purchase.

Towing and Hauling Capabilities
Although Ford has yet to release the official F-150 Lightning capacities, the automaker says it hopes its all-electric truck will tow up to 10,000 pounds, and max payloads are expected to reach up to 2,000 pounds.
In addition to its impressive battery-powered towing and hauling capabilities, Ford’s all-electric truck will offer an impressive list of tow-friendly tech features. The Pro Trailer Hitch Assist system can automatically align the coupler and hitch ball and available onboard scales will measure payload weight based on your model’s specifications. You can even zero out the current load to measure the weight of additional items.
Use Smart Hitch technology for additional help loading trailers and towing them safely. This system helps you ensure that trailer weight is evenly distributed, and it can notify you when hitch weight is too low or too high. Or, simply guide you through the process of proper hitch tensioning and weight redistributing.

Exterior Features
Like its gas-powered cousins, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning offers a variety of exterior trim, grille, and wheel options that cater to your personal sense of style.
Unlike those gas-powered cousins, though, the F-150 doesn’t have an engine, and therefore offers extra cargo space under the hood, in what Ford is calling its Mega Power Frunk. Not only can you stow up to 400 pounds of gear inside its 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space, but the Frunk also includes four 120-volt power outlets that offer up to 2.4 kilowatts of power, courtesy of the Pro Power Onboard station. The Frunk lid is power opening and the interior is washable and drainable, which allows it to double as a cooler at tailgate parties. This nifty Frunk also comes standard with a cargo management that includes tie-downs, grocery hooks, and a multi-function lid divider.
With the available Tailgate Work Surface, folding down the tailgate provides a multi-purpose work area that includes clamp pockets, tailgate tie-downs, and space for writing, measuring, and cutting. The Work Surface is grained to cut back on slippage, and it even includes a ruler, smartphone holder, cupholder, and other small item storage.
Add the Enhanced Zone Lighting to light up the area 360 degrees around your F-150 Lightning. This setup includes bed lightning for after-hours work and play, and you can also use the FordPass app to turn different lightning zones on or off.
